(AUDIO INTERVIEW + MUSIC MIX)
This year the iconic Mexican artist Jorge Reyes would have been 70 years old. Reyes managed to create an exquisite balance between the ancient sonic canon of pre-Hispanic cultures and the modern ambient music. He was obsessed with discovering and polishing the sounds that preceded the "Latinization" of his native culture, insisting on using ethnic instruments from the Mayan and Aztec eras. Far from being merely a technical exercise, his perennial synthesis draws its strength directly from the shamanistic ritual practices and visionary experiences. For Jorge, music served a purpose beyond hedonic reasons. Music was always the medicine. Although an interview with Jorge Reyes is no longer possible on Journeys to the Infinite show, we remember his unique personality and pioneering work along with one of his sound brothers and fellow explorers of primal futurism, Steve Roach.
The episode is dedicated to the memory of my brother, Daniel Burcea (1975-2022).
