STEFAN ERBE: ERBEography, Designing Sounds for the Next Reality

(AUDIO INTERVIEW + MUSIC MIX)

German electronic artist Stefan Erbe works at the intersection of music, technology, and visual narrative, using sound as a medium to explore future-oriented ideas. Active since the early 1990s, he has released more than 30 albums, including his latest, The Enemy Inside, as well as the award-winning releases Method, Nachtlichter, and Genesys23. A significant collaboration with the Hagen Observatory has led to ongoing projects with planetariums and multimedia venues, particularly through initiatives such as “Sound of Sky,” which pairs music with custom visuals and astronomical projections. From his early electronic setups to more complex digital systems, Erbe has continually adapted his methods, incorporating algorithmic structures and narrative concepts that often reflect the relationship between humans and technology.

In this interview, Stefan Erbe discusses the evolution of his work over more than three decades, the chemistry of interdisciplinary exchange, and the challenge of maintaining an independent voice in a rapidly changing digital landscape. The conversation provides insight into an artist who creates not just music, but coherent, forward-looking environments shaped by sound, image, and ideas.
